Businesses everywhere are experiencing a “greening” of the economy. While this shift has been growing for decades, more recently many public and private sector actors have been pushing for reform to traditional economic models in order to address pressing issues related to climate change, as well as key social and economic challenges.
In 2015, countries worldwide adopted the so-called 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These goals recognize that alleviating global poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build clean economic growth by acting on a range of various environmental and social needs including education, social protection, job creation, preserving biodiversity, and water and land stewardship. In Canada, the drivers behind a “greening” economy include government policy and regulation, financial sector requirements with regard to disclosure as well as performance, and consumer and workforce preferences. All of these considerations are now often referred to as “ESG”.
While environmental protection efforts have traditionally focused on considering risks and impacts on business, green economic opportunities are there for the taking. Some analysts predict that the global market for green innovation could reach $5 trillion or more by 2025. New green business opportunities, industries, skills, and markets are the global economic prize.
