Professional

Mark Terrill’s notable business career has been built around his choice to be the type of leader who empowers others to learn and succeed. Over the course of his 35-year career in the insurance industry, he built and grew three different firms, each of which was a long-term success story. Mark’s passion for business in general and for the development of the people who helped grow his companies fueled their ongoing prosperity and growth.

After graduating from University of Toronto with a B.A. (Honours) and acquiring his CIP, Mark quickly distinguished himself in the insurance industry when he acquired the brokerage he was working with. Within a few years of becoming President he ad expanded Thompson & Co., organically and through acquisition, ultimately negotiating a merger of it with another firm. Not content to sit on his laurels, Mark immediately began another business, eventually merging with Jones Brown. He became President of that leading private Canadian brokerage in 2007 and rose to CEO in 2010. Throughout his career, Mark’s strong, supportive leadership attracted – and retained – the best talent and his long-term vision ensured that his companies were built to last.

Mark began a commitment to life-long learning twenty-five years ago when, as a young entrepreneur, he joined the CEO group of TEC Canada founder Dr Lynn Tanner. He was the longest-standing member of that group until he resigned as a member, to continue his involvement as a TEC Chair. Mark is in the process of obtaining a Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching from Royal Roads University. He is Chair of TEC 200, a mature CEO group, as well as a TEC Sage group.

TEC Group Vision

As a long-term TEC member, Mark has witnessed or played a part in many of the compelling experiences that change the business and personal lives of TEC members. As a Chair, he describes himself as “all-in,” caring deeply for their experience and them personally while driving the member experience forward through accountability and fresh ideas. For his TEC 200 group, he welcomes successful executives looking to take their business to the next level, who are willing to grow in every part of their lives. For Mark’s Sage group, ideal members are transitioning executives or entrepreneurs whose days of operating a business full-time may be drawing to a close, but who still wish to be engaged with their peers in relevant discussions, gain sources of information on legacy issues such as family business or wealth transfer, and explore questions around finding fulfillment in the next phase of their lives.

Personal

Mark is married to Ellen. He has a son, David, and two stepchildren, Stephanie and Jordan, through his marriage. He enjoys participating and watching sports, including squash, golf, hiking and biking. He is a Flames season ticket holder and devoted Toronto Blue Jays fan. He has served on numerous boards and has been active in community service, including as President of his Rotary Club and as Chairman of the Calgary Parks Foundation.
