Robert Murray is a natural leader, a charismatic self-made businessman and executive who began his career as an electrician and today is a sought after corporate strategist, turnaround specialist and business visionary. He is also a #1 best-selling author, and an international keynote speaker who shares his business knowledge, energy and enthusiasm to help others discover their own boundless potential.
After graduating from night school with a marketing diploma, Bob was asked by his employers, an industrial electrician firm, to run the marketing department. The rest, as they say, is history. He quickly rose through the ranks, and within a few years had developed a speciality at turning around business units. During his time as an executive at TELUS, Bob specialized in business unit turn around and strategy projects. One noteworthy project was when he took over the Operator Services division. The task was to turn around the organization’s industry-worst engagement, customer satisfaction and cost structure. Despite budget pressures and required layoffs, Bob led a team that transformed the division into the highest-rated in the industry. He was ahead of his time in identifying the relationship between culture, employee engagement and the corporate bottom line. He says that most of his successes as an executive hinged on his capacity to engage the hearts and minds of his team members. His motto: “If you take care of your people they will take care of your customers.”
Bob continued his corporate education, sharpening his strategic abilities in twenty European countries as a senior executive with Vodafone, one of the world’s largest companies. It was during this time that he earned the nickname “Strategy Yoda.”
More recently, Bob has been a partner at Incrementa Consulting, where he works with senior executives to build strategy, generate high-performance culture, manage change and develop leadership. He has sat on boards, including the publically traded Russell Brewing and as an advisor to tech company ElementFour. Now this dynamic leader is sharing his practical knowledge and leadership insights as a TEC Chair, with leaders who are looking to unlock their potential for the remarkable.
TEC Group Vision
Bob has a thirst for learning that is contagious. He is a consummate storyteller who shares leadership lessons from the people who have inspired him, such as his high-school friend Terry Fox. Although he is trusted to provide business solutions as a consultant, as Chair of a CEO group he will be leading the group through a process to galvanize members into finding their own strategies. He particularly welcomes the founders of mid-size, private companies who are ready to address the issues that may be holding back their business from being as successful as it could be. It is revealing of his own leadership style that Bob says “When things have gone well, I have looked out the window at my team. When they are going less than good, I have looked in the mirror.”
Bob is happily married to Colleen, his wife of over thirty-two years. They have two adult children. He enjoys skiing in the winter and open water swim racing in the summer.
