“As architects, we don’t go into architecture to necessarily become business people – it’s a learning curve that we all experience. When I became Practice Leader in 2015, I went to my partners and expressed that I needed some mentorship and a group of other leaders to help me learn and get better at the role. They agreed to support me in joining TEC Canada, and it has been a fantastic resource for me – and in return – a fantastic resource for the firm”.

GREG IN 100 WORDS

Greg Hasiuk – Architect and Practice Leader of Number TEN Architectural Group – is motivated by innovative design ideas that enhance the daily lives of people and communities. With a passion for architecture and design that stemmed from childhood road trips across North America, Greg quickly realized he was not only fascinated with the way structures and environments looked – he was captivated by the way they made him feel. As Number TEN’s Practice Leader, Greg’s role is to lead the delivery of strategic business objectives, communicate the firm’s vision, and empower its staff to generate optimal value for clients and stakeholders. An advocate for innovative technology, sustainable design strategies, efficient processes, and a team-focused approach – Greg is devoted to the art of creating exceptional spaces that work, beautifully.

COMPANY PROFILE

Number TEN Architectural Group is an award-winning integrated architecture and interior design firm specializing in design innovation, project delivery, planning, advisory services, and visual communications. Number TEN is dedicated to serving its clients and communities by designing places that make life better. Using innovative technology, sustainable design strategies, efficient processes, and a team-focused approach, Number TEN excels at using architecture to tell a story about its clients, the building’s users, and the community at large.

Since its inception in 1969 from the merger of several firms within the Winnipeg area, Number TEN has gone on to create a long list of acclaimed Canadian structures including the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre in Winnipeg, the Journey to Churchill exhibit at Assiniboine Park Zoo, and the Nunavut Justice Centre in Iqaluit, Nunavut.

WITH TEC

When the previous Practice Leader at Number TEN retired, Greg – who was the youngest partner at the time – was encouraged by the other partners to progress into the top leadership position. After assuming his new role as Practice Leader, Greg knew that Number TEN’s long-term success was dependent on him embracing leadership development and steering outside of his comfort zone.

One benefit of TEC that Greg has found particularly effective? “The one-to-one coaching [with TEC Chair Joanne Sigurdson] helps me get out of my day-to-day craziness and spend a few hours thinking about what I need to do – and in return – what the firm needs to do to succeed going forward. So far, we’ve managed quite well through the pandemic and TEC has helped me gain clarity about the priorities”.

TEC’S IMPACT

With a commitment to growth and a dedication to fostering lifelong learning throughout the firm, it’s clear how Greg’s journey from Senior Architect/Partner to Practice Leader has led Number TEN to its highest revenues to date.

“When I joined TEC, Number TEN was going into its worst fiscal year in a decade. My TEC group helped us navigate the difficulties and tough times. That’s when you need TEC, and its community of advisors and confidants the most – to help you strategize and keeping moving. Since that time five years ago, our bottom line has steadily risen, and our 2019 bottom line was double our average year”.

Under Greg’s leadership, it’s not just Number TEN’s bottom line that has flourished, as an outstanding western Canadian firm, many of Number TEN’s projects are accompanied by awards, accolades and industry distinction. Most recently, the power of the TEC community has led Greg and fellow TEC member LeeAnn Croft – Principal Architect at 1080 Architecture – to collaborate on the creation of École Connaught Community School in Regina, which earned the 2019 Exceptional Planning Award from the Association for Learning Environments at the international LEsolutions Conference in Anaheim.
