Professional
Mark Sutcliffe believes that entrepreneurs are essential to building strong, prosperous, progressive communities. Mark is passionate about CEOs and business owners reaching their full potential through thoughtful, strategic leadership, evidence-based decision-making and the support of experts and peers.
In a long leadership career in business and the media, Mark has co-founded the Ottawa Business Journal, created and launched major events including the Forty Under 40 and the Best Ottawa Business Awards (BOBs). As a CEO, entrepreneur, investor and board member, he has played a prominent role in several companies, including InBusiness Media, Great River Media, Sportstats, and Thyme & Again.
Mark has also championed small business and economic development as the chair of the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce, and as a board member at Invest Ottawa, Algonquin College, Run Ottawa and the Ottawa International Writers Festival. He also wrote a weekly business column for the Ottawa Citizen for more than 10 years.
As a business adviser with Invest Ottawa, and as a partner in the management consulting practice Sutcliffe+Whalen, Mark has provided advice, guidance, strategic planning support and coaching services to dozens of small to medium businesses and CEOs.
Mark’s calling as a TEC chair arises from his experience as an entrepreneur, his skills as a coach and facilitator, and his belief that CEOs and business owners travel a remarkable but often isolated and difficult path. With the support and feedback of peers in a safe, confidential environment, entrepreneurs can carefully and strategically explore all their options for overcoming personal and professional obstacles and make smart long-term decisions for themselves and their companies.
